Success of Hardwood Tree Plantations in Indiana and Implications for Nursery Managers

چکیده
The purpose of our study was to address the lack of information on the success of hardwood tree plantations established on nonindustrial private forestlands as it relates to the silvicultural practices employed during the first 5 years following planting. Through a telephone survey of afforesting private landowners and a field assessment of their plantations in Indiana, we found that seedling survival was higher on those sites where a mechanical tree planter was used compared to sites where seedlings had been hand planted. Seedling vigor was enhanced through the use of herbicide prior to and subsequent to planting. Nursery managers can help to increase the success of plantation establishment by educating landowners about silvicultural practices and facilitating maintenance of the critical link between nursery production and field

Soil changes induced by hardwood and coniferous tree plantations establishment: Comparison with natural forest soil at Berenjestanak lowland forest in north of Iran
Increasing urbanisation and industrialisation have led to a dramatic reduction in forest area, and now only culturally protected remnants of natural forests and some new plantations remain in most areas of the north of Iran. To investigate the status of the chemical and physical characteristics of soil under these remnant forests and assess the possible impacts of reforestation on soil properti...
متن کاملInfluence of seasonal planting date on field performance of six temperate deciduous forest tree species
Most afforestation hardwood plantations in the Central Hardwood Forest Region, USA, are established with bareroot seedlings planted in late winter or early spring. This brief planting season is preferred for several logistical and physiological reasons, yet interest in fall planting has increased as a means to extend the planting season. We evaluated effects of a wide range of planting dates on...

This study was conducted in the Kordofan region of Sudan during 2011–12. It was devoted to the morphology associated to the juvenile development and performance of tree species of Capparaceae and Combretaceae in a nursery and early field growth. The nursery experiment was conducted to study morphological characters to identify seedlings of tree species under study. Seedlings were transplanted t...
